THE HISTORY OF POINSETTIAS

poinsettias

Poinsettias are a distinctive plant and a popular addition to any holiday décor. They are native to the rocky canyons of Guatemala and Mexico. Poinsettias were cultivated by the Mayans and Aztecs to be used for fabric dye and medicinal benefits.

In the 1600’s, Poinsettias started being associated with the Christmas holiday in southern Mexico. The priests would use the colorful leaves to create gorgeous nativity scenes. Poinsettias were introduced in the United States around 1827 by Joel Robert Poinsett, our nation’s first ambassador to Mexico. As Poinsettias grew in popularity, they were named after him.

POINSETTIA CARE TIPS

Did you know that Poinsettias are tropical plants? They enjoy partial sunlight during the day, but they can thrive indoors with little light. Place near a sunny window for the best exposure. Poinsettias prefer temperatures between 65 and 70 degrees during the day, but they prefer slightly lower temperatures at night.

Watering Poinsettias is vital to the health of your plants. Make sure to water when the surface of the soil feels dry.

To avoid leaf loss and maintain happy and healthy Poinsettias, keep these considerations in mind:

  1. Do not place your plant against a cold window or near a cold draft.
  2. Avoid keeping your Poinsettias in areas that are too warm or too dry.
  3. If your leaves start to wilt and the soil feels dry, that means your plant is thirsty and needs water.
